article &#8220;Video8 digitizing&#8221; I will exchange my experience on how to digitize 20 year old analog Video8 ( 8mm ), vhs and\u00a0HI8 movies in the year 2011. I will also explain my configuration and used devices to digitize the 8mm magnetic tapes. My goal was to capture the movies by my own.\u00a0I decided to capture the movies by my own because the offers I found in the internet were to expensive for me. I had up to 40 tapes for digitizing. The main configuration consists out of the following devices which I bought for digitizing the old tapes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HI8 video cassette recorder (analog Video8 \/ HI8)<\/li>\n<li>canopus video- analog \/ digital converter<\/li>\n<li>Video cutting computer (I used a MAC Mini)<\/li>\n<li>Video cutting program (I used Final Cut Express 4)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only in the rarest cases the digitizing works fine\u00a0by the first try.\u00a0Noisy pictures, dull colors and perennially artifacts are disturbing the enjoyment of your digital output. It is important not to save money on the hardware and software. With a good video cutting software it is possible to clean noisy pictures and to correct dull colors. Even the analog digital converter is very important for a clear picture.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sony_Video_8_Camcorder\"><\/span>Sony Video 8 Camcorder<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>My grandmother recorded the movies with a Sony CCD 90-E camcorder 25 years ago (approx. 1985). At that time the Sony CCD 90-E was one of the best camcorders available on the market. I&#8217;m excited about the camera because it still works. This small size enabled the companies which produced camcorders to shrink the video8 camcorders in size and to build camcorders for normal consumers like my grandmother.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Video8_player\"><\/span>Video8 player:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are two possibilities to play back the\u00a0video8 tapes. The first one I tried out was to use the Sony CCD 90-E camcorder to play the movies and to recorder them. If the original camcorder is lost or out order you can buy an used one on e.g. ebay. The second possibility\u00a0I also tried out was to buy an used video cassette recorder for video8 and HI8 tapes. I used this recorder only for play back the old magnetic tapes.<\/p>\n<p>The Sony EV-C3 was a typical device for cutting video8 tapes in this time and my grandmother bought one. She used the EV-C3 to cut, dub and play back\u00a0the video8 tapes. I had this problem with the Sony EV C3 as well with the original Video8 camcorder CCD 90-E the movies were made with. The solution was to buy a nother player. I decided to buy a HI8 video recorder to play back the movies. On the left side ist the turntable for the HI8 and Video8 tapes. This is very important to save trouble with unsynchronized audio streams. I found the Canopus DV 110 which is cheap on ebay and digitize with a very good hardware solution.<\/p>\n<p>After I had plugged the Canopus DV 110 to my video recorder I only had to plugg the ADVC 110 to my Mac Mini. I always use Apple products for digitizing analog movies like my Mac Mini. The Mac Mini recognized the Canopus at once. With iMovie09 it is possible to use the Canopus like a camcorder and to dub movies right away. The Canopus is pluged with a FireWire wire to the computer.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Format_und_space\"><\/span>Format und space:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As recording format I used DV because the compression is very low. The only problem you have with the DV format is the large space you need to store the movie files. The space usage for 12 3\/2 1 houre tapes was about 130 GB as raw data.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"My_configuration_for_digitize_the_Video8_tapes\"><\/span>My configuration for digitize the Video8 tapes:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The following pictures shows my configuration for capturing Video8, HI8 and VHS magnetic tapes.<\/p>\n<p>On the picture you see from the left to the right the following devices:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>external HDD for the raw data<\/li>\n<li>the MacMini with the installed iMovie09<\/li>\n<li>the Canopus ADVC 110 Analog-digital converter<\/li>\n<li>the video recorder with the supported Video8, HI8 and VHS formats<\/li>\n<li>my screen with iMovie in the importing modus<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div id=\"attachment_738\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogyourearth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Video8-digitalisieren-Aufbau.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-738\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-738\" title=\"Video8 digitalisieren Aufbau\" src=\"https:\/\/www.blogyourearth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Video8-digitalisieren-Aufbau-300x189.jpg\" alt=\"Video8 digitize configuration \" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-738\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Video8 digitalisieren Aufbau<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I paid about 430 euros in sum for the external HDD, Canopus Analog-digital converter and video recorder. It is not cheap but to have a minimum of\u00a0trouble\u00a0was important for me.\u00a0A nother consideration was to give the tapes away to an external serivce. After this I bought a used HI8 video recorder on ebay. The HI8 video recorder played back the movies in a very good quality without noises. I&#8217;m very happy with the result and now I started cutting the movies and building the DVD&#8217;s. If you have more then 20 tapes I think the expenditure is worth to buy all the stuff.
